Friday Fun RICHIE RICH "Military Mix-Up"

The Dreaded Deadline Doom caught us this week...

...so enjoy this carry-over from our brother RetroBlogHero Histories, featuring The Poor Little Rich Boy kicking Russkie butt in this tale from Harvey's Richie Rich #51 (1966)!
Whatta guy!
And he didn't even have to become Super-Richie/Rippy...
...to do it!
(If you think there's a lot of Spider-Man or Batman titles out now...and there are quite a few...it's nothing compared to Richie Rich at his peak, when there were...take a deep breath...
32 simultaneous monthly, bi-monthly and quarterly Richie Rich Universe titles!
And that's not including Casper, Sad Sack, and all the other non-Richie Rich Harvey titles!

You read that right, True Believer!
By the way, they were all selling better than almost everything Marvel and DC has out there now!

Reading Room FLASH GORDON COMICS "World You WILL Live In"

Though the Flash Gordon stories in this four-issue series from Harvey were newspaper reprints...
...there were text stories and ongoing features that were new material!
This feature appeared in all four issues of the 1950-51 book.
Sadly, the writer and artist are unknown.
It's fascinating to see what they got wrong...and more importantly, what they got right!

Monday Madness ALARMING TALES "I Want to Be a Man!"

Following up on yesterday's guest-post about artificial intelligence...

...is this little tale about an AI who aspires to be more than mere machine!
Written and penciled by Jack (King) Kirby and inked by Kirby with Simon & Kirby Studios partner Joe Simon, this story from Harvey's Alarming Tales #2 (1957), this short feature would be quite different if done today, since miniaturization would enable David to put FABIAC in a human-sized form with close-to-human features...as Kirby himself did with X-51 aka Aaron Stack aka Mr Machine aka Machine Man 20 years later!

Reading Room ALARMING ADVENTURES "Earth Went Haywire"

Here's a never-reprinted tale from Harvey's Alarming Adventures #3 (1963)...
...about a "forgotten man" who saves the world from Armageddon!
With today's "decompressed storytelling, this five-page short would be, at least, a mini-series with numerous full-page and double-page spreads...collected, of course into a tpb reprint!
The creators are unknown, but knowledgable sources have suggested Carl Burgos, Bernard Baily, and Stan Goldberg as the artists...

Reading Room ALARMING ADVENTURES "New Star"

Things aren't always what they seem...
...as this story, with a Twilight Zone-style ending proves!
Ah, the old "it's Earth and we didn't realize it!" trope!
Did artist Bob Powell also write this never-reprinted tale from Harvey's Alarming Adventures #2 (1962)?
His studio was supplying a lot of comics material to several different publishers, and even from his earliest work for Fox back in the late 1930s, Powell would sometimes write the stories as well!

Monday Madness YOUR VOTE IS VITAL!!!

And there came a day unlike any other day, when heroes banded together to battle a menace so overwhelming no single hero could stand against it...
,,,unless not enough of those heroes actually go to vote!
Here's a handy (very) basic guide...
Illustrated by Warren Kremer and Al Avision, this one-shot published by Harvey Comics in 1952 (70 years ago) was offered for only a couple of pennies a copy to anyone who wanted to utilize it to get out the vote!
Amazing how it's both generic and pertinent even decades later!
Note: Out gratitude to the ever-amazing Kracalactaka for the scans of this ultra-rare comic!
Now, unless you want things to stay as they are (or get worse)...if you're over 18 and under 110...

Reading Room ALARMING TALES "Secret Weapon"

We've worried about homeland security for decades...
...but, quite frankly, we're damned good at it!
OK, maybe we haven't produced an invisibility device/formula...yet, but we Americans can handle anything terrorists can thtrow at us, as this never-reprinted Silver Age story from Harvey's Alarming Tales #4 (1958) shows!
BTW, it's written bJack Oleck (a talented novelist and comic book writer who was the brother-in-law of Alarming Tales editor Joe Simon) and illustrated by Johnny Quest's co-creator Doug Wildey!

Reading Room ALARMING ADVENTURES "Silent Street"

A quiet suburban street late at night...
..hardly the typical locale for a sci-fi story, eh?
We'll see...
Did Harii take possession of Bowen's body after teleporting there or do the two simply look alike?
(Harii apparently didn't arrive in a ship of his own, so teleportation is the most obvious answer.)
The "poetic" explanation would be that Harii was waiting for Vlado inside Bowen and "emerged" when Vlado arrived...except we had seen Harii back on their world, so he couldn't have been waiting on Earth!
George Tuska illustrated this never-reprinted tale from Harvey's Alarming Tales #1 (1962), but the writer is unknown...
