Design of the Week--Green Slime!

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...
It's the kool poster art for one of the weirdest, wildest sci-fi films of the psychedelic '60s.
The Green Slime
was an Italian-Japanese-American co-production about alien spores who attach themselves to a space station, grow to five feet tall, start ingesting the human crew with the intention to do the same to the population of Earth!
It's fast-paced, has pretty good sfx (on a par with the Godzilla and Gamera flicks of the period), and the multi-national cast features some solid actors including Robert Horton, Richard Jaeckel, and Luciana Paluzzi.
The writers of this amazing opus included Bill Finger, co-creator (with Bob Kane) of The Batman, and Ivan Reiner, screenwriter of Wild, Wild Planet and other Italian genre films!
The funkiest part, though, is the now-legendary theme song written by Charles Fox, who previously had done the music for Barbarella!
It's NOT on American (Region 1) DVD, though Japanese imports are available.
There is an OOP pan and scan VHS, but it's a little pricey!

We thought the poster would fit in perfectly as a Halloween-oriented t-shirt, mug or other collectible gift for you or your pop-culture-oriented loved one!
Get it...before the Green Slime gets YOU!

FREE Bonus: Link to a downloadble mp3 of the way-out Green Slime theme song!

Halloween "Horrors" (both G and PG-13)

September is here, school has started, the leaves are turning orange and brown, and already our somewhat- warped thoughts naturally turn to...HALLOWEEN, the koolest holiday of all!
We at Atomic Kommie Comics™ have told you about our Horror Comics of the 1950s™ and Seduction of the Innocent™ sections, PLUS the Martians, Martians, Martians™ category of The Future WAS Fantastic™, all of which have kool retro horror-oriented goodies year-round for the older kids-at-heart.
But what about something for the younger crowd, the tweens and pre-teens, the toddlers and babies?
Well, never let it be said we ignored a target demographic!
We have a Haunted Halloween section with a subsection specifically-for those little ones who want a slightly-scary take on the spectral and spooky, as well as one for the 7-13 category who want a bit more meat on the bone (as it were).
We're also offering Yard Signs & Banners, plus; invitation and greeting cards, ghostly garb, and ghoulish goodies like monstrous mini-buttons (great as treats instead of tooth-rotting candy), reusable trick or treat bags, and other creepy collectibles.
Note to the older crowd, sorry, but the shirts 'n stuff are kid-sized only.
Have a look and order now, before the late-October rush!

Señorita Rio: the FIRST LATINA Comic Book Heroine!

"Señorita Rio" was the code-name given to popular Hispanic-American film actress Rita Farrar (real name: Consuela Maria Ascencion De Las Vegas), as she performed espionage against Axis agents in Central and South American countries, using a tour to promote her movies as a cover.
She was proficient with weapons, and could handle herself in perilous situations, requiring rescue by male associates far less frequently than most heroines of the Golden Age.

Based on real-life actress and World War II pin-up queen Rita Hayworth (who most people don't realize was Hispanic-Irish-American! Her real name was Margarita Carmen Cansino), Señorita Rio started as a backup feature in Fight Comics #19, and took over the cover slot as of #37 for a year.
After that, she remained as a backup, at least, until #71, when she retired from espionage and returned full-time to her acting career.

The first few Señorita Rio stories were illustrated by noted Golden and Silver Age artist Nick Cardy, but the bulk of her tales were rendered by one of the few female artists of the era, Lily Renee, who did spectacular work in every comics genre: sci-fi, adventure, superhero, war, western, horror, and romance!

Atomic Kommie Comics™ has lured Señorita Rio out of retirement, as beautiful and deadly as ever, on two of her best covers, in our Heroines™ line of cool comics-based collectibles including tops, bottoms, t-shirts, mugs, and other goodies!
(She's also one of the dozen dynamic dames on our Heroines™ 2010 12-Month Calendar!)

If you're a gal who wants to show off a classic example of female empowerment, or a guy who's confident enough in his masculinity to display a strong (and voluptuous) woman, head over to see Señorita Rio!

Fantastic Femmes--Brenda Song

Note: this page has been updated with NEW info HERE!
Brenda Song began her career as a child fashion model and quickly moved into tv commercials.
Then, after appearing in guest roles on a variety of tv series, she landed in the Disney talent pool where she was groomed for pop-culture stardom the way many other young performers like Lindsay Lohan, Hillary Duff, Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens previously had been.
Like them, she became a supporting player in a number of Disney Channel tv movies and ongoing series including The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Phil of the Future, before being given a "breakout" lead role of her own--Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, for which the black belt-holding actress did most of her own fight sequences!
While it hasn't generated the resulting media frenzy of, say, Hannah Montana, Wendy Wu did well enough to warrant a sequel and possible ongoing series.
Trivia: Brenda supports charitable causes including St. Jude's Childrens' Hospital and the eco-oriented Disney's Friends for Change.
Genre appearances include...
Boogie Town (Natalie)
Macy's Presents Little Spirit: Christmas in New York (Paige)
Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior / Wendy Wu 2 (Wendy Wu / performer "I'm Not That Girl")
American Dragon: Jake Long (Tracey)
Holidaze: the Christmas That Almost Didn't Happen (Treat)
Phil of the Future (Tia)
Ultimate Christmas Present (Samantha Elizabeth "Sam" Kwan)
100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd (Sariffa Chung)

Design of the Week--Judy of the Jungle

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...
Since our new Jungle Girls calendar has received such an amazing response, we decided to move up our plans to roll out some of the new images from it on kollectibles including messenger bags, t-shirts, et all with the one that has the most crossover appeal for both males and females.
Presenting...Judy of the Jungle!
One of a plethora of animal skin-clad heroines who popped up after World War II, Judy had several things going for her...
1) A name you could actually pronounce! Most jungle-based heroines had names like Rulah, Vooda, even Zoot!
2) She was a redhead, making her visually-distinctive from the mostly-blonde crowd!
3) Her covers, illustrated by noted Golden Age artist Alex Schomburg using the alias "Xela", were paintings, rather than pen-and-ink art, giving them a unique "look"!
So, if you're looking for a strong role model for a young lady, or you just want to look at a powerful, scantly-clad woman in action, the Atomic Kommie Comics™ crew sez you can't go wrong with...Judy of the Jungle!

Design of the Week--Halloween Horror!

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...
With Halloween coming, it seems only appropriate that we go with scary themes for the next few weeks.
Our NEW piece is from a forgettable 70s horror flick (in fact, we don't even remember the title!) with GREAT poster art!
It's gruesome!
It's graphic!
It's gut-grabbing!
Isn't that exactly what you're looking for in Halloween-wear?

Fantastic Femmes--Jasika Nicole

Note: this page has been updated with NEW info
HERE!
I'm hooked on JJ Abrams' Fringe!
One of the best-written and acted shows of the past decade.
John Noble as Walter Bishop is an absolute delight to watch in action. Never a dull moment with that guy!
And the season finale with the alternate universe...WOW!
(JJ does have a thing for alternate realities. Think he's gonna tie in Star Trek and LOST into this potential multiverse?)
But there's a mystery even more elusive than ZFT!
Why doesn't Agent Astrid Farnsworth get MORE screen time?
Jasika Nicole is an extremely-talented actress who can easily hold her own on-screen with Noble, Joshua Jackson, or Anna Torv!
C'mon Abrams, give her some time outside the lab!
At least let her shoot somebody! :-)

The Coming of...the Conqueror!

Daniel Lyons crash-landed his plane in the Rocky Mountains.
Luckily for him, he landed near the hidden laboratory of reclusive scientist James Norton, who used his invention, the Cosmic Ray Lamp, to restore the wounded pilot to health, enhancing Daniel's physical and mental abilities to near super-human levels while also giving him amazing regeneration abilities.
Professor Norton persuaded ex-solider Daniel to use his new powers to fight the Axis, from whom the scientist had fled to America in 1938.
Now clad in a red-white-and-blue costume, the man renamed The Conqueror carried on a one-man war throughout Europe!
In addition to his superpowers, the Conqueror relied on the fighting skills he picked up in the military.
He carried a revolver and throwing knife, but as you can see from the cover, he was experienced with ANY hand-held weapon, and had no compunction about using them against the enemy!

Created by Bill Everett, who was also conceived HydroMan, Amazing-Man, and Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner, The Conqueror rampaged thru all four issues of Victory Comics before the book's untimely cancellation just before Pearl Harbor!
He didn't return to comics until 2007, when he cameoed in Alex Ross' Project SuperPowers, where he's apparently deceased and his soul is now part of The American Spirit!

We at Atomic Kommie Comics™ appreciate the (unfortunately) short-lived patriotic hero, and digitally-restored and remastered his best Golden Age cover appearance as part of our Lost Heroes of the Golden Age of Comics™ line of kool kollectibles!
So give the Conqueror a shot...before he gives you one!

And, just a gentle reminder to pick up the Project SuperPowers comics, on sale now!
They're the best Golden Age revival books out there!

Basil Rathbone IS Sherlock Holmes--the 12-Month Calendar!

As Sean Connery is to James Bond 007, so Rathbone is to Sherlock Holmes!

Yeah, Daniel Craig is the 007 du jour (and he is good, make no bones about it).
But, when you see the name in print or hear the theme, who do you picture?
Be honest, it's Connery...Sean Connery!

I'm looking forward to the Robert Downey jr flick, but the image that still comes to mind when "Sherlock" is uttered is the man who was the face (and distinctive voice) of the erudite, eloquent Holmes for generations...Basil Rathbone!

So celebrate Sherlock in general, and Rathbone in particular, with this new 2010 12-month calendar featuring a Baker Street dozen movie posters and lobby cards featuring Rathbone as Holmes along with Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson and Dennis Hoey (yeah, I thought it was "Hooey", too) as Inspector Lestrade!

"The calendar's afoot, Watson!"

Design of the Week: Halloween Hole-in-the-Head

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...
With Halloween coming, it seems only appropriate that we go with scary themes for the next few weeks.
Kicking off our compilation of creepy collectibles is this ghoulishly-graphic image from one of the types of comic books that gave Dr Fredric Wertham such fits in the 1950s!
(Wertham was the psychiatrist who claimed that horror comics caused juvenile delinquency, resulting in the demise of the genre and the near-death of the comic book industry. Despite his heroic efforts, juvenile delinquency continued to flourish!)
Yeah, it's gruesome, but in a campy, cartoonish fashion!
Isn't that exactly what you're looking for in Halloween-wear?

U.S. Jones: the Everyman as Hero!

At first glance, U.S. Jones was just another of a long line of 1940s super-heroes who wrapped themselves in the star-spangled red white and blue of the American flag.
Introduced in WonderWorld Comics #28, he made the cover twice before the title was cancelled and he was given his own short-lived title.
What made him different from other patriotic-themed heroes was...
1) He had NO secret identity, (It's speculated that his name was "Ulysses S. Jones" or somesuch)
2) U.S. Jones had no weapons or super-powers.
He described himself as "...an average American doing what's right."
He always won in the end, but it wasn't easy for him...
3) No origin.
He simply was there from the first story onward, fighting foreign evil!
4) While other heroes ran fan clubs, U.S. Jones was calling American youth to action against "America's Enemies". (This was before the US entered World War II.)
The "U.S. Jones Cadets Membership Kit," which the readers sent away for, told the readers that democracy must be protected at all costs, and listed ten rules for members; these included keeping fit, conserving resources, and knowing one's neighbors, among other things. (It also goes for a pretty penny on eBay...when you can find it!)

Since then, he languished in comic book limbo until Alex Ross included him as one of the time-lost heroes of Project SuperPowers.
Unfortunately, he has not adjusted as well as most of the others to being revived in the present day...

We at Atomic Kommie Comics™ respect the Everyman of patriotic heroes and have digitally-restored and remastered his best Golden Age cover appearance as part of our Lost Heroes of the Golden Age of Comics™ line of kool kollectibles!

And, just a gentle reminder to pick up the Project SuperPowers comics, on sale now!
They're the best Golden Age revival books out there!

Fantastic Femmes--Shari Belafonte

Note: this page has been updated with NEW info HERE!
Shari actually began behind the camera (believe it or not) as a freelance production assistant, moving on to a job as Assistant to the Publicist at Hanna-Barbera, the animation studio!
She moonlighted as a fashion model, then dropped her day job altogether to appear in Calvin Klein commercials which led to offers for film and tv work!
Besides tv guest-star and featured film roles, Shari was a regular on the Hotel tv series as Julie Gilette. as well as co-hosting the series Lifestyles with Robin Leach.

With her devotion to personal fitness (including endorsing only diet and nutrition products she personally uses), Shari posed for Playboy magazine at the age of 45, displaying a superbly-toned body many twenty-somethings would be proud to have!
But don't think she's just a pretty face (and amazing body)!
She donates much time and energy to worthy causes including as interantional spokesperson for the Starlight Children's Foundation!

After several years away from national tv or film work, Shari recently appeared on Nip / Tuck.
Hopefully the first of many new roles for this femme fantastique!

Trivia: Shari is the daughter of legendary singer / actor Harry Belafonte.
She's recorded several albums, most of which were released only in Europe, and command high prices on eBay!
Genre appearances include...
Babylon 5: ThirdSpace (Elizabeth Trent)
Mars (Doc Halliday)
Real Adventures of Johnny Quest "Other Space"
Sonic the Hedgehog (Lupé the Wolf)
Beyond Reality (Laura Wingate)
Fire, Ice & Dynamite (Serena)
Velvet (Julie Rhodes)

Monarch of Magicians--Marvelo!

He had a hell of a pedigree in that his "parents" Gardner Fox and Fred Guardineer created, among other magician superheroes, Doctor Fate and Zatara!
Wearing a white tux, cape, and turban, Marvelo, the Monarch of Magicians (he had no alter ego) was described in various stories as "European" and spoke somewhat stilted English.
Aided by his Chinese assistant Zee, Marvelo was able to use incantations and hand gestures to dematerialize and walk thru walls, levitate himself and others, and perform other magic-based feats as the story demanded.
His arch foe was a similarly-powered Asian sorcerer named Guran who always escaped to cast spells again!
Marvelo zapped his way thru the first 20 issues of Big Shot Comics and the premiere issue of The Face before performing his greatest feat--totally disappearing from the memories of men until Alex Ross revived him 50 years later in Project SuperPowers! as one of the Big Shots superteam along with fellow Columbia Comics heroes The Face and The SkyMan!

We at Atomic Kommie Comics™ have also restored Marvelo to the ranks of four-color masters of magic by digitally-restoring and remastering his best Golden Age cover appearance as part of our Lost Heroes of the Golden Age of Comics™ line of kool kollectibles!

And, just a gentle reminder to pick up the Project SuperPowers comics, on sale now!
They're the best Golden Age revival books out there!

Design of the Week--Super Circus!

Each week, we post a limited-edition design, to be sold for exactly 7 days, then replaced with another!
This week...
"Be a clown! Be a clown! All the world loves a clown..."
A bright, cheerful image of a clown from the long-running 1950s live-action tv show.
Perfect for tykes, toddlers, and preschoolers!

Interestingly, since it was broadcast in black-and-white, the only time kids saw the performers in color was on ad posters, magazine photos, or on licensed products!

FREE Back to school BONUS: Downloadable episode of the series available here! See what enthralled your parents and grandparents before YouTube!

What will the Marvel / Disney merger produce? (part 2)

Another piece submitted by Jack "King" Kirby to Craig Yoe's book The Art of Mickey Mouse.
This one, believe it or not, was NOT used in the book!
I'm not sure if it was a case of only one contribution per artist or lack of space, but it's as kool (if not more so) than the previous piece!
This piece by another comics legend, Wally Wood, was used in TV Guide back in 1966-67 for an article about superhero cartoons dominating the previously funny animal-oriented Saturday morning cartoon schedule due to the success of the live-action Batman tv series!
(Remember when there WAS a Saturday Morning cartoon schedule?)
Note the Marvel characters get the primary focus.
Oddly, while Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four both had Saturday morning cartoons, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Sub-Mariner, (along with the Hulk in the background) were actually part of the Monday-Friday Marvel Super-Heroes show!
Plus, Green Lantern, Flash, and Hawkman were just segments in the Superman / Aquaman Adventure Hour (Come to think of it, where is Superman? Aquaman can be seen between Mr. Fantastic and the Human Torch...)
And, you'll note the ONLY funny animal / humor character not fleeing in terror is Mickey Mouse!

What will the Marvel / Disney merger produce?

Behold...the coming of...Marvel Mouse!
(Mighty Mouse was already trademarked)
Jack "King" Kirby was indeed a visionary!
This was done, tongue-in-cheek, for a book in 1991 called The Art of Mickey Mouse edited by Craig Yoe, but seems extremely prophetic now!

Disney Buys Marvel Comics!

Official Press Release
Worldwide leader in family entertainment agrees to acquire Marvel and its portfolio of over 5,000 characters

BURBANK, Calif. & NEW YORK, Aug 31, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- --Acquisition highlights Disney's strategic focus on quality branded content, technological innovation and international expansion to build long-term shareholder value
Building on its strategy of delivering quality branded content to people around the world, The Walt Disney Company (DIS) has agreed to acquire Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (MVL) in a stock and cash transaction, the companies announced today.
Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney on August 28, 2009, Marvel shareholders would receive a total of $30 per share in cash plus approximately 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. At closing, the amount of cash and stock will be adjusted if necessary so that the total value of the Disney stock issued as merger consideration based on its trading value at that time is not less than 40% of the total merger consideration.
Based on the closing price of Disney stock on Friday, August 28, the transaction value is $50 per Marvel share or approximately $4 billion!
Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters. Ike Perlmutter will oversee the Marvel properties, and will work directly with Disney's global lines of business to build and further integrate Marvel's properties.

My opinion...
With Disney's control of tv networks ABC, ABC Family, and Disney Channel, and of course, experience in theme parks, I think we can finally expect to see Marvel multi-media properties developed properly. (Remember the MarvelMania restaurant chain?)
Time-Warner's synergy with DC Comics has resulted in major media successes in film, tv, and theme parks! Disney should be able to match that easily!

Captain V aka the Puppeteer

OK, see if you can follow this one...
Alan Hale is a professional puppeteer. He's also a direct descendant of Nathan Hale.
Alan has a pet bald eagle named "Raven"
Raven can talk.
Raven can also play a pipe organ (with his claws, obviously).
Whenever Raven senses danger, he plays the opening chords of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. (FYI, the chords match the dot-dot-dot-dash pacing of the Morse Code letter "V" [for "Victory"]. It was an extremely popular musical motif in movies and dramatic radio shows of the 1940s to denote particularly patriotic events. I'm not going to explain Morse Code. Google it...)
This magically transforms Alan into the red-white-blue garbed superhero Captain V who then goes forth to battle saboteurs and spies with super-strength and the ability to emanate energy in the form of red-white-blue "V-Beams" which he travels upon!
The good Captain ran thru All-Top Comics for it's entire super-hero run, but never made the cover.
He finally made the cover for the one-shot Book of Comics, after which he moved to Bomber Comics, where he shared the covers (but not interior stories) with Wonder Boy. Curiously, he was renamed The Puppeteer, but kept the patriotic costume and abilities. (And, one of the Bomber Comics covers showed both him and Wonder Boy manipulating criminals like puppets!)
He also appeared in several other one-shots like All-Good Comics, but never made the cover again.

He is NOT, as some have speculated, V-Man, another patriotic character with a similar costume, but a different identity, powers, and origin!

While Alex Ross has given V-Man a rather prominent role in Project SuperPowers, Captain V has been given rather short shrift so far, being confined to flashbacks, and implied to be one of the heroes who make up The American Spirit, a composite of the souls of deceased super-heroes!

No matter what his name, we at Atomic Kommie Comics™ have also restored Captain V to the ranks of flag-draped super-heroes by digitally-restoring and remastering his lone Golden Age cover appearance as part of our Lost Heroes of the Golden Age of Comics™ line of kool kollectibles!
So, we're running Captain V up the flagpole to see if anyone will salute!
