Reading Room AMAZING ADVENTURES "Red Hills of Uganda"

Remember the scary-cool giant-ant movie THEM!?
This never-reprinted tale from Ziff-Davis' Amazing Adventures #5 (1951) predates it by three years!
While the writer is unknown, the art is by Ray Bailey, a long-time newspaper strip and comic book artist with a long string of sci-fi credits including Tom Corbett: Space CadetBruce Gentry, and UNDERSEA Agent.
BTW, IMHO, if there was ever a good movie that deserved remaking with state-of-the-art SFX, it's THEM!.

Reading Room WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "Flight to the Future"

"Jobs were scarce after the Great Atom Bomb War..."
They wrote that in 1952!
We haven't had an atomic war...yet.
But good jobs are still scarce in 2019, despite claims of "full employment by Don da Con!
The inimitable illustration style of Basil Wolverton just oozes from every panel of this tawdry tale from Key Publications' anthology Weird Tales of the Future #2 (1952).
And, the odds are he wrote the story as well.
Wotta guy!

Wednesday Worlds of Wonder WALKING DEAD "Presidential Address" Conclusion

...a crippled alien starship crashes on Earth and it's cargo, a gas (created to revive dead aliens to continue fighting their centuries-old war) leaks into the atmosphere.
Due to differences between alien and human biology, it also revives dead humans...who are sentient, but maniacal!
The President declares martial law as local government collapses, and considers using nukes to end the problem!
Meanwhile, an isolated group of survivors is under siege from the sentient (and well-armed) zombies...
The Saga Continues...
Next Wednesday!
Created by writer/artist Jim Somerville and published by Malibu/Aircel in 1989, it was vastly-different from the 2003-present graphic novel series created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore.
For collectors, there's good news and bad news...
Good news: There's only a four-issue mini series and a one-shot Special to collect!
Bad news: Because it didn't sell well (and has never been reprinted), it's HTF (hard to find) and expensive!

Reading Room PHANTOM WITCH DOCTOR "Out of the Deep!"

Avon's Phantom Witch Doctor (1952) was a unique one-shot...
...with a lead story featuring the title character and a trio of totally-unrelated tales backing it up.
Whether the creature is a Lovecraftian-type Elder-God, a stranded alien, or just a sentient life-force is never really explained.
Another unsolved puzzle is who the writer and artist(s) for this never-reprinted short story were.
But what's life without a few mysteries, eh?

Monday Madness DRACULA Dracula One-Page Tales #2

While the English-language reprints of the 1970s Spanish Dracula magazine didn't have any Dracula...
...the original Spanish title had these one-page jokes on the back cover!
Both England's New English Library and America's Warren Magazines (who licensed the NEL translated version) left out these entertaining pieces...despite the fact no translation was needed!
Written and illustrated by Alfonso Figueras, these one-pagers now make their American debut!
Be here every Monday in October for more kool vampire humor!
